We’re delighted to welcome the latest gin to our Shetland Reel family – Countdown Gin!
Made in collaboration with Shetland Space Centre, it marks the countdown to the UK’s first ever vertical satellite launch, which is set to take place in Unst in 2022. The proposed launch site is just a few miles from our distillery, so we’ve created something special to mark the occasion and raise a glass to this exciting new venture.
The gin
Fans of our Original Gin will love this new distillation, which is crammed with more juniper, more spice and more citrus, as well as the locally harvested botanical apple mint.
As with all Shetland Reel Gins, this is a London Dry Gin, handcrafted in our 100 litre copper still. The botanicals are then added to the still and soaked for 24 hours before distillation.
For a perfect serve that’s out of this world (boom!), mix a double measure with Fever-Tree’s Premium Indian Tonic Water and a wedge of pink grapefruit. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try it with a slice of kiwi. A more traditional orange peel works too.
The collaboration
Countdown Gin, like all our products, is very much rooted in the story of Shetland. The island of Unst, where our distillery is based and the UK’s most northerly inhabited island, is the home of the Shetland Space Centre. The island will be the hub of the UK’s space activity, sending small satellites into orbit from the launch site in Lamba Ness.
Not only is this fantastic news for the UK space sector, it’s also great news for Shetland, opening the door to a whole new industry in the islands and potentially creating several hundred jobs in Unst and the wider Shetland economy.
As a neighbouring business to the Shetland Space Centre, we want to show our support and what better way than with a bespoke space-themed tipple?
We’re expecting Countdown Gin to blast off shelves (pardon the pun!) and we invite you to pick up your bottle today online or in-store across Shetland.
